The Foot Sweep in judo is a basic technique that's easy for kids or beginners to learn. In order to successfully complete the foot sweep, you need to know the beginning fighting stance for judo and how to safely fall. One opponent pulls the other off balance and then simply sweeps his leg. The person whose foot is being swept should be able to fall safely before trying this technique.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand in the beginning judo fighting stance in which both opponents are standing and grabbing the uniforms with both hand.

  2. Step 2

Take one step forward if you are the attacker, forcing your opponent to take one step back. Then reverse your direction and pull back on your opponent, forcing him to take a step forward and shift his balance.

  3. Step 3

Position your feet so that your opponent's left foot is out in front and your right foot is behind. Shift your own weight onto your left leg as much as possible so that you can use your right foot to sweep your opponent's left foot.

  4. Step 4

Lift up with your left hand on your opponent's uniform. At the same time, pull down with the right hand on your opponent.

  5. Step 5

Bring your right foot forward as you lift and pull and sweep his left foot just above the foot at the Achilles tendon. Maintain your grip as your opponent falls.

Tips & Warnings
  • This technique is most effective if your opponent is moving. When practicing, take a step as directed, but when using this technique in sparring, wait for your opponent to take a step himself and use his momentum to move into the Foot Sweep.
