The forearm lock in judo is one way of evading a grab on your arm, collar or elsewhere on your upper body--even a chokehold. The technique of the lock involves using your wrist and forearm against your attacker's forearm to apply pressure to your attacker's wrist. The basic move is a hand motion, with a step back as you bend over.

From Quick Guide: Learn Judo
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Allow your opponent to grab with his left hand on your right sleeve or collar lapel. He can also grab elsewhere with his right hand, but you will only be applying the forearm lock to his left hand.

  2. Step 2

Reach over with your left hand and clamp down on your opponent's hand. At the same time, reach your right hand around to the right, up and over your opponent's left forearm.

  3. Step 3

Keep your right thumb down and your hand rigid as you apply pressure to your opponent's forearm.

  4. Step 4

Step back with your left foot quickly and bend over, keeping both hands on your opponent's arm and hand to keep him from breaking free. You should be pulling her elbow down towards your own hip as you bend, causing pressure on her wrist and elbow.

  5. Step 5

Retreat. When practicing, pay attention to when your partner wants to be released or tap out of the technique.

Tips & Warnings
  • Like all joint locks, this move is dangerous and can cause damage to the tendons and ligaments. When practicing, go slowly through the moves and learn the technique together with your partner so that you both know what to expect and can avoid accidental injury.
