How to Install Internal CD/DVD Drives

Make sure that your computer case and motherboard support the number of drives (hard drives, floppy drives and CD/DVD drives) you want to install. Most computer cases have four internal drive bays. You need to designate master and slave drive in order to install multiple internal CD/DVD drives. Use the higher speed drive as the master drive.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Jumper the internal CD/DVD drives. Each drive comes with a plastic jumper that needs to be inserted on the appropriate pin pair at the back of the drive to designate the drive as a master or slave. Insert the jumper over the vertical pair labeled MA to designate the master drive or the pair labeled SL to designate the slave drive.
Step2
Mount the internal drives in the computer case drive bays. Secure each drive in place using the screws that came with your new drives.
Step3
Connect each drive to the motherboard using one of the supplied ribbons. Connect the connector of the master drive to the end connector of the ribbon. Connect the slave drive to the middle section of the same ribbon. Finally, connect the ribbon to the motherboard connector.
Step4
Plug the power cables into each drive from the computer power supply.

Tips & Warnings

  • A CD/DVD drive also needs to be connected to your sound card in order to play music and movie files. A smaller cable is included with the CD/DVD drive if this is the case. Refer to the drive's manual for the proper installation procedure.
