The hyzer and anhyzer shots are two basic techniques disc golfers use to maneuver their discs around obstacles on the course. The hyzer shot curves in the opposite direction of your throwing arm, while the anhyzer shot curves in the same direction as your throwing arm. The anhyzer shot also leads into the S-shot, which travels great distances through the air.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold the disc in your throwing hand using a backhand grip.

  2. Step 2

Line up your shot so you're directly facing the obstacle. Make sure you've got enough power to get your disc beyond the obstacle or you'll end up curving your shot right into it.

  3. Step 3

Consider around which side of the obstacle you want the disc to fly before selecting your shot.

  4. Step 4

Prepare a hyzer shot by tilting the disc sideways toward your other arm. Then, throw the disc out and slightly away from your body in the direction of your throwing arm.

  5. Step 5

Prepare an anhyzer shot by tilting the disc slightly away from your other arm. Then throw the disc out and away from your body.

  6. Step 6

Follow through your shot with a strong arm motion. This maximizes your shot's power and distance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Both the hyzer and the anhyzer golf shots are more effective in large, open spaces than in closed, tight spaces.
  • Step into your shot with your dominant leg to increase your power.
  • Launch each of these shots at about a 45-degree angle above the ground to increase their hang time.
