How to Use a Fixed Base Power Router

A fixed based power router is a great tool to use when making round edges, inside edges, dado cuts and many more wood projects. Before you make the first cut with a fixed base power router, you need to learn the basics of taking care of the equipment.

• Wrenches that come with the router
• Wire brush

1. Attach your wood with clamps or hold it with a vise. The power of the router causes the wood to fly.

2. Look out for bit slippage. Check to see if the bit has slippage in the collet by making a mark with a black marker on the bit and collet. Use the power router. If the line on the bit and collet are no longer lined up, remove the bit. Clean the collet and bit of any sawdust or pitch and try again.

3. Unplug the router when you make adjustments. Remove the battery on a cordless router when you make adjustments. Each bit has a sharp cutting edge; combine that with power and your fingers and the results aren't pretty.

4. Keep a sharp router blade. Make certain that the blades are kept sharp and clean on the bits. Clean the collet after each job.

5. Check to see if the tool is the correct one for the job you are doing and the material that you are using. Use the bit that is made for the material when you use a power router.

6. Secure a new bit in the collet and double check it for tightness. Changing the bit is a two wrench process. Make certain that the bit isn't loose or it will go flying when the router is turned on.

7. Tap the collet with a wrench if the bit is stuck in it.

• Never work on the router with it plugged in.
• Never attempt to hold the wood or leave it unsecured when you route.
• Always use the wrenches supplied with the tool when changing bits.
• Never attempt to use a pliers to remove the drill bit from the collet, as it damages the cutting edge.
