A hot stone massage on the upper back relieves tension throughout the entire body. The penetrating heat of the hot stones soothes the fascia tissue and relaxes the muscles. This allows the circulation to flow more smoothly and flushes away toxins from the system. Working on the upper back with the hot stones creates a nurturing experience like that found in the finest of spas.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Roaster oven
  • Hot stone set (50 pieces)
  • Massage oil
  • Sheet
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oiled stones in water in a roaster oven for a half hour. The stones will retain the heat. Touch the stones to your forearm to make sure they are a comfortable temperature.

  2. Step 2

Position your client face down on a massage table and do five minutes of regular back massage with oil. This relaxes the client and allows you to evaluate where the tight muscles are.

  3. Step 3

Drape a sheet over the back. Place the largest stone, called a "sacral stone," on top of the sheet over the bottom of the client's spinal column. Lay the sheet back over the sacral stone and client's hips.

  4. Step 4

Take two of the larger stones, test them for temperature and start massaging the entire back in long strokes. Keep the stones moving until they lose some of their heat. Place them on either side of the spine toward the bottom.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Step 4, placing the stones further up on the spine. Keep repeating this procedure until you have placed stones all the way to the neck.

  6. Step 6

Cover the client with the sheet and allow to rest for five or ten minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dip the hot stones in cold water for a moment if they feel too hot on your forearm.
  • Ask the client to give you feedback on their comfort level. Always make them feel safe.
  • Remember that the tender skin on the back could burn easily.
  • Don't rub the stones over any of the spine or ribs that protrude.
