How to Chill the Wort When Brewing Beer

Rapidly chilling the wort from boiling to room temperature is an important step in making a home brew. Chilling quickly reduces the production of flavor-altering compounds and allows you to add yeast to the wort. The copper coils of the wort chiller funnel cold water around the wort and carry the heat away.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wort chiller
  • Water source
  1. Step 1

    Lower the copper coils of the wort chiller directly into the brew pot. Make sure that the wort chiller is properly cleaned and sanitized and your heat source is turned off.

  2. Step 2

    Connect one end of the wort chiller tubing to a garden hose or other water source. One end of the tubing is usually equipped with a connector.

  3. Step 3

    Place the other end of the wort chiller tubing in a spot where the heated water can drain easily.

  4. Step 4

    Turn on the hose so that water continuously fills the tubing.

  5. Step 5

    Allow water to run through the wort chiller anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes, or until the brew pot is cool to the touch. Refer to your home brew recipe for the best temperature to add the yeast.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't have a wort chiller, you can cool the wort by placing the entire brew pot into an ice bath. Smaller batches and certain home brew recipes may even call for ice baths.
  • Clean and disinfect all your equipment before and after use.
