Hapkido is a form of Korean martial arts as well as a self-defense technique. Hapkido teaches it's students how to block the attacks of common street criminals and assailants as well as those of skilled martial artists. One of the most important preliminary techniques in beginner hapkido is basic grabbing and in just a few easy steps you can begin adding it to your practice routine.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make your wrist as big as possible and compromise the grip of your attacker when they begin grabbing at your wrist. Open your palm into the basic hapkido live hand position, which means that you should open your palm and spread your fingers as far as possible. The live hand technique will allow you room to rotate your wrist.

  2. Step 2

Turn your palm so that it is face up and quickly bring your opposite hand up under your attackers wrist, grabbing the top of their palm and pinching your thumb into the space between their thumb and forefinger. Push your thumb firmly into their palm, turning their wrist out slightly to further compromise their grip. You should now be able to release your hand.

  3. Step 3

Use the hand which they were originally grabbing to grip their palm, which is face up, and place your thumb near your opposite thumb. Now that you have the advantage, begin to twist your attackers wrist out, away from their body, while at the same time you take a step backwards with one leg. This action will cause severe pain in the assailant's wrist, stopping the attack.

  4. Step 4

Vary the basic hapkido grabbing technique if you cannot step backwards by pushing the attacker forward instead. The results are basically the same, and should be used in accordance to your specific situation.
