The Half-Up Half-Down Ponytail is a flexible hairstyle for young girls who have long hair that needs to be held back, but get finicky about having all of their hair tied back. It's also a good dressy hairstyle and can be dressed up with curls or ribbons. Big girls can use the half ponytail, too as a base for fashionable prom and wedding styles as well as casual styling.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comb
  • Hair band (color to match hair)
  • Hairspray
  • Hair clip
  • Hair accessories, if desired
  1. Step 1

Use a comb to separate the top section of hair from the bottom section. Comb in a straight line just above the ears.

  2. Step 2

Brush out both the bottom section, which will stay down, and the top section in your hand, which will become the ponytail.

  3. Step 3

Comb the top section straight back from the hairline, or part the hair on the side and comb the two halves of the part back from the sides of the head to meet in the back. Secure the ponytail with a hair band that matches the color of the hair.

  4. Step 4

Hairspray around the sides and front of the hair to secure any flyaways.

  5. Step 5

Experiment with different hair accessories. You can use a clip instead of a hair band to secure the ponytail or add ribbons or hair jewels to the top section of the hair to dress it up.

  6. Step 6

Braid the ponytail into a single braid or multiple small braids for a fun, different look for girls. For a dressy look, curl the hair in the ponytail and leave the rest straight or curl the hair that is down and leave the ponytail straight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use this hairstyle rather than a regular ponytail if the hair is too short to secure all of it in a ponytail or the hair is so thick that a single ponytail is heavy on the head and becomes painful.
