Creating elegant hairstyles can be as easy as putting your hair in a ponytail. This updo and other hairstyle variations can be created with just a ponytail and some curlers or a curling iron to add an elegant touch. Decide where to place your ponytail updo--at the nape of the neck, the middle of the head, the top of the head or to the side--and start curling.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair mousse or gel
  • Hair band (color to match hair)
  • Bobby pins
  • Curlers or curling iron
  • Hairspray
  1. Step 1

Put mousse or gel in your hair or wait one day after washing hair, to get hair that is easier to work with and less soft and fluffy.

  2. Step 2

Pull your hair back into a ponytail in the desired spot for your updo. The nape of the neck is an elegant choice, but if you have very long hair or a lot of hair you may want to do a high ponytail. Part your hair on the side and then pull back into a ponytail for a more fashionable look in the front.

  3. Step 3

Use a hair band that is the same color as your hair. Secure any lumps or loose strands with bobby pins. If the hair band is not the same color as your hair, take one small section of hair and loop it around the ponytail to cover the band. Secure with a pin.

  4. Step 4

Use curlers or a curling iron to curl small sections of the hair in the ponytail, one section at a time. After curling the section, use your fingers to create a loose loop that hides the ends of the hair and clip it just above the ponytail.

  5. Step 5

Continue to create loose loops and clip them around the entire ponytail. If necessary, clip loops on top of one another until you are finished clipping all of your hair into the updo.

  6. Step 6

Leave the ends of some or all of the loops loose instead of tucking them under if you have very long hair and want to create some variety or have some stray curls in the updo.

  7. Step 7

    Hairspray the finished style.

Tips & Warnings
  • For very thick hair, it may be easier and more manageable to create two ponytails side by side instead of just one. You can also orient the two ponytails one on top of the other for an elegant vertical updo.
  • Create a funky, trendy look by placing your ponytail to the side, just behind one of your ears, instead of at the center of the back of the head.
