2. Pick up some rubber gloves. If you visit a beauty supply store, you might find reusable vinyl gloves. Vinyl is a great alternative for people who are allergic to latex.

3. Buy foil. While regular kitchen foil works when coloring hair, professional beauty supply stores often stock foil that is pre-cut, folded and measured. Professional hair coloring foil includes features like pop-up packaging and transparency that allows you to see the progress of the coloring.

4. Purchase rattail combs. These types of combs let you work with both ends to separate hair and apply hair dye. They also come in different sizes. Buy a comb with a tooth width that meets your needs.

5. Choose clips for hair sectioning. Having a variety of clips in different sizes on hand helps when attempting to apply varying colors or highlights to hair.

6. Get plastic bowls big enough to accommodate the different amounts of hair dye with which you plan to work. Purchase at least one plastic bowl for each color of dye.
