There are many different hair braiding styles, and one of the easiest to achieve begins with making a ponytail. Read this article to learn professional tips on how to create a clean and sleek ponytail, which is the basis for a great looking braid.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Brush your hair thoroughly to remove all the tangles and knots, and then spritz it using a warm, saltwater solution. Saltwater removes excess oil from your hair, which makes it easier to work with when hair braiding.

  2. Step 2

Use a hairdryer to blow the hair in the direction of the ponytail. For example, to fashion a ponytail in the back of the head, you should blow the hair away from the face.

  3. Step 3

Start at the top of the head and use a brush to sweep the hair into your opposite hand. Brush the hair on each side of your head back into your hand until you have a firm grasp on all of your hair.

  4. Step 4

Bend your head back slightly to create tension when brushing the hair on the underside of your head. Do this to prevent a loose ponytail or sagging hair.

  5. Step 5

Smooth your hair and ensure that it is in place. Position your ponytail between the crown and roundest part of your head, and secure the ponytail using a hair elastic. Be sure to use a covered hair elastic as opposed to a rubber band to prevent your hair from pulling or breaking.

  6. Step 6

Apply hairspray to the finished ponytail, smoothing down any stray hairs in the process.
