The fishtail braid is sometimes referred to as the Herringbone braid because of its appearance. It's a very elegant braid that can be created from a ponytail or on the full head. Once you get the hang of it, you can do the fishtail braid on your own hair too.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rubber band or hair elastic
  • Hair spray
  • Bobby pins
  • Hair brush
  1. Step 1

As you get toward the bottom of the fishtail braid, continue criss-crossing sections of hair until you're out of hair to work with.

  2. Step 2

Hold the fishtail braid in one hand. Tie an elastic or rubber band around with the other hand.

  3. Step 3

Tie it tightly to prevent the hair from slipping out of the braid. Let the braid fall down your back if you prefer to wear it that way.

  4. Step 4

Tuck the braid tail up under the fishtail if you did a full fishtail in your hair. This will give you a more polished look. You can either tuck the entire braid under or half of it, depending on the look you want.

  5. Step 5

Secure the braid with bobby pins. Spray the entire head with hairspray.

  6. Step 6

Wrap the fishtail braid around itself to create a bun. This works best if you braided a ponytail, not a full fishtail. Secure the hair in place with bobby pins and spray with hairspray.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a unique look, cross the sections of hair under each other instead of over.
  • Keep your hands close to the head to create a tight fishtail braid. Loosen up your hold on the hair to make a looser fishtail.
