Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to chipping the ball onto the green. Most golfers struggle at some point with getting a consistent chip that they can control and manipulate depending on the length they need. Practice is the best way to become consistent.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice chipping by finding a spot. Start by working a few feet off the green.

  2. Step 2

Use about 5 to 10 balls to practice with at a time. Aim for a flag that is at least 6 feet or more from the edge of the green.

  3. Step 3

Hit one ball trying to get it just a few feet onto the green. Get the feel of the swing by practicing a couple times after each hit. Use a pendulum motion by swinging the club through as far as you swung back.

  4. Step 4

Add some length to your next chip by swinging your club just a little further back. The ball should pop onto the green and go a little farther.

  5. Step 5

Keep adding to your chipping swing until you land the ball just near or if you're lucky, in the hole.

  6. Step 6

Adjust the back swing to get the power you need for the length of the chip. Practice this by working your way to the hole and back again by chipping with different lengths of the backswing.

  7. Step 7

Make it a game by competing with a friend. Take turns hitting to the hole or a designated area before the hole.

Tips & Warnings
  • Give yourself a goal. Hit three out of five balls in an area you choose ahead of time before moving on to a different area. This gives a good feel for what kind of swing it took to get to that point.
