1. Decide on the type of nail file you want to use. Buying an assortment of less expensive nail files will help you make a choice. If none of these appeal, more on to more expensive ones in order to judge which one is right for you.

2. Select from emery boards, metal files and glass files. Emery boards are the least expensive nail file and have more selections. Glass nail files are becoming more popular because they now come two-sided, in a variety of colors and three different sizes. The drawback is that they are more expensive.

3. Make your selection based on the type of nails you have. If you have natural nails, you need a different nail file then if you have acrylic nails--although there are some nail files that you can use for both.

4. Understand whether you can sterilize the nail file or not. This is an important factor, since you can get diseases from using someone else's nail file.

5. Choose the size and type of nail file based on your needs. If you want a nail file to fit into your purse, choose a small nail file; alternatively, you may want to look for a larger nail file for the times when you are manicuring your nails. The shape you decide on also comes into play depending on the purpose of the nail file. Nail files come straight, round, rectangular and boomerang shaped.
