Things You'll Need:
- Carpenter pencil
- 2 x 4s
- Stud clips
- Plumb bob
- Chalk marker
- Square
-
Step 1
Mark the centerline of the wall on the ceiling. Make 3 marks along the line and then chalk them.
-
Step 2
Measure the length of 15 ¼ inches for the inside stud. Then measure 16 inches repeatedly from the first stud to the end of the wall. Mark your measurements with a carpenter pencil.
-
Step 3
Take two 2 x 4s and lay them side by side on the floor of the garage—-this is the plate of the wall. Repeat the measuring in step 2. Draw perpendicular lines on the plate; use a square, as the lines must align with precision.
-
Step 4
Find the ceiling joist. Take the top plate and place along the chalk line on the ceiling. Nail the top plate into the ceiling joist. Use two 3 ½-inch nails.
-
Step 5
Get a plumb bob and hang it from both ends of the top plate. The plumb bob will drop to just above the floor. Mark the floor where the plumb bob hangs. These marks are a guide for the floor plate.
-
Step 6
Snap a chalk line on the floor like you did on the ceiling. The chalk line will run over the marks you made from the plumb bobs. Nail the floor plate every 16 inches. Use 3-inch nails.
-
Step 7
Purchase stud framing clips and install. You will use a 2 x 4 as the stud and place the clip and board on the marks you made earlier. Use a carpenter's level to make sure the studs are level.
