Finger independence in guitar playing is the ability to do different things with the fingers at the same time. While important to all genres, this term most often refers to techniques of the playing hand in classical guitar. The following steps will show how to learn finger independence for guitar.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold the playing hand in the correct position. The fingers should be held loosely as if holding a ball with the wrist slightly bent. The forearm rests on the guitar with the fingers near the strings.

  2. Step 2

Position the thumb to the side of the fingers so it can work independently. Keep the wrist above the strings so the thumb can play bass lines on the lower strings and the fingers can play melody on the upper three strings.

  3. Step 3

Develop an alternative playing technique. Playing fingers should not be used to play two notes in a row for classical guitar. Instead, the fingers are often used in the following order: index, middle, ring and sometimes the little finger as well.

  4. Step 4

Practice the playing order given in Step 3. At first you should concentrate on plucking with each finger using equal strength so the notes have the same volume.

  5. Step 5

Check for correct technique before increasing the speed. Keep the fingers curled under the palm so they are able to roll over the strings smoothly without getting "caught." The hand should not bounce up and down as each finger plucks a string; only the fingers should move.
