Things You'll Need:
- Chainsaw
- Crosscut saw
- Bow saw
-
Step 1
Determine if the tree is healthy or rotten inside. If the tree is rotten, it may be difficult to get it to fall where you want.
-
Step 2
Select the area you want the tree to fall. The first notch cut will make the tree fall in that direction.
-
Step 3
Make a notch on the trunk. The notch should be a comfortable height for you.
-
Step 4
Create a notch that is 1/3 of the diameter of the tree. A tree 12 inches in diameter will have a notch 4 inches high and 4 inches deep.
-
Step 5
Cut the side opposite the notch next. You may lose control of the tree at this point if you calculated the first notch incorrectly.
-
Step 6
Understand all that can go wrong with felling a tree before you start. Felling is dangerous work.
-
Step 7
Watch for kickback of your chainsaw. Make sure the chainsaw has the proper safety equipment factory installed.
