Things You'll Need:
- Extruder and die
- Lubricant
- Cutting tool
-
Step 1
Select the size and shape of die you want. Dies are available in many varieties and change the thickness and pattern of the clay as it comes out of the extruder.
-
Step 2
Spray a lubricant into the chamber of the extruder so that the clay can move through the metal freely. If it sticks to the sides it will ruin your coils.
-
Step 3
Cut and mold the clay with your hands so that it fits into the top of the extruder. Roll the clay gently back and forth until it's rounded; this molds the clay properly. Put the die into the chamber and let it fall to one end. Load the cut and molded clay into the open end of the extruder. Keep loading clay until it fills the chamber.
-
Step 4
Affix the gun part to the open end of the extruder and make sure it's fastened tight. Move the die end close to a flat surface to prepare for the coils to come out. Pull the lever with one hand as if you're pulling a gun to shoot. Hold the barrel of the extruder in your other hand. Move the gun backward slowly as you continue pulling the trigger.
-
Step 5
Cut the clay from the extruder once you have your desired length of coil. Your coils should appear uniform and air bubble free.
