Tennis is a fun game that is a lifelong sport because it's played by people of all ages. You can spend hundreds of dollars on equipment, but there isn't much that you need to get started.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tennis racket
  • Can of tennis balls
  • Wristband
  • Sneakers
  1. Step 1

Buy a tennis racket. You will probably want to buy your first racket from a sporting goods store rather than online so you can choose based on how the racket feels in your hand. A more expensive racket will last longer, but it's not necessary to spend a lot of money if you're a beginner--just choose something that is comfortable to hold.

  2. Step 2

Purchase some tennis balls. Most brands of balls will play well when they are new--if you choose a name-brand ball like Wilson or Penn they will generally keep their bounce longer. Buy a large can of balls--if you limit yourself to a three ball can, you will spend lots of time retrieving balls rather than learning how to hit the ball.

  3. Step 3

Invest in a wristband or two. Wristbands protect your wrists from injury, so it's worth it to have them on hand.

  4. Step 4

Make sure your sneakers are good. Check the bottom of your shoes to make sure they have some tread left and are non-marking. If they're too worn, purchase a new pair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Although you can learn from a friend, investing in a couple of lessons isn't a bad idea. Simple Tennis sells videos you can buy that demonstrate basic tennis strokes.
