1
Clean the runner on the door thoroughly with the head of the broom. Loosen the dirt first. Then use a vacuum to remove the loose dirt. You may need to use a scrub brush to clean. If absolutely necessary, lift the door out and clean.
-
2
Tap on the bottom edge of the outside door to find where the glass ends. You don't want to drill through the glass.
-
-
3
Line up the lock bolt with the area where there is no glass. Put the lock against the back of the inside door where you will connect the sliding door lock. Push the bolt against the outside door. Mark the top screw hole to hold the lock on the back edge of the inside door.
-
4
Poke a light dip with a punch or awl where you marked for the screws to hold the lock. Slowly drill where you marked for the screws. Remember, there is glass right behind the mark, so just go slowly and only go far enough to break the surface and allow you to put the screws in easily. Do this for the first screw only.
-
5
Lightly screw the lock down. Mark the spot for the second screw. Remove the first screw. Punch and drill to hole for the second screw. This hole is on the bottom and you don't need to be careful of hitting the glass. Attach the lock and use a marking pen to outline where the sliding door lock bolt will hit on the outside door.
-
6
Begin the hole with a punch, then move to a 1/8-inch drill bit to start the hole. Check to see there is no glass. Use different bits or a step bit to gradually work it up to a 1/2-inch hole.
-
7
Test the lock. Lightly screw on the lock and make certain that the bolt goes into the hole easily. If everything works properly, tighten down the screws.
