Step 1
Follow the leader who will set up the basic rhythm patterns for the drumming session. He will start the drumming and everyone should jump in when they can follow his lead.
-
Step 2
Slap the center of the djembe with your full hand flat. If you start with your right, then follow with your left. Then hit the rim with your fingers closed, once on each hand, then again with your fingers open, once on each hand. Then repeat the steps of this very basic djembe rhythm, which is used in many drum circles.
-
Step 3
Do a four-beat basic rhythm by hitting the center of the djembe with each hand, slapping the rim with open fingers and repeat. Do this over and over until you can fell the deep African roots this kind of drumming is meant to invoke.
-
Step 4
Reverse your hands occasionally to give your hands even slapping time. While you play each hand for the same number of times, the lead hand is slapped a little harder for effect. You will be able to play longer if you can rotate your leading hand when playing the rhythm.

Step 5
Join a group that has a respect for the leader and that has other drummers willing to play the basic rhythm section for long periods of time. Following their lead is wonderful practice.
