You'd like to keep your car running well and maintain the ignition system, including the spark plug wires and distributor cap. Proper lubrication of the spark plug wires on the distributor cap can increase the life of the spark plug wires by virtually eliminating corrosion caused by moisture in the air. Here's how to protect your spark plugs, distributor cap and wires by lubricating them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Get a Clymer or Chilton's manual for your car's make, model and year. You will need it as reference for your specific vehicle. This will have easy step-by-step instructions on how to gain access to your ignition system for your particular make and model of car.

  2. Step 2

Follow the directions given in the manual to gain access to the distributor cap. You may have to remove part of the air intake to be able to access it.

  3. Step 3

Remove it and the spark plug wires by gently pulling them from the distributor cap, following the directions in your Clymer or Chilton's manual.

  4. Step 4

Apply dielectric grease to the inside of each of the distributor cap's terminals. This seals the contacts from outside air and moisture to add a layer of protection.

  5. Step 5

Grease the spark plug wire terminals with the dielectric grease as well. This will help keep oil from backing up into the terminals and shortening the life of your spark plugs.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can purchase dielectric grease at any auto parts store.
