It's important to read the owner's manual for your car before you try and make repairs yourself. The owner's manual recommends parts like a distributor cap come from the manufacturer. This isn't to say that other distributor caps won't work.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Find where to re-install the distributor cap. Often there are air hoses and wiring that block the area of installation. Clear a path and get to work.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a new carbon brush and spring before you start the project. You will get these parts with a new distributor cap kit.

  3. Step 3

Determine if the cap has coils. You will find a silicone washer in the kit. The washer needs to fit on the coil-mounting surface.

  4. Step 4

Take the coil wire and unplug from the wiring harness. Then unscrew and remove the coil cover. Use needle nose pliers to remove the coil wires once it is unfastened from the cap.

  5. Step 5

Transfer the coils from the old cap to the new one, as coils very rarely go bad in a distributor cap.

  6. Step 6

Push the spark-plug wires from the old cap to the correct terminal in the new cap.

  7. Step 7

Install the coil in the cap and then reattach to the distributor cap. Many distributor caps build up carbon deposits and this does not necessarily mean the insides are bad.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read your owner's manual before you make a repair to your car.
  • Label the wires if necessary as this will help you remember their proper location.
  • Always disconnect the battery cables before you begin a repair project.
