Step 1
Purchase a mantle if you don't have one. You can get a great deal on a used one at a salvage yard or estate auction. Mantles are essential for visually framing the fireplace and giving you shelf space for placing items that add color and dimension.
-
Step 2
Decorate the mantle with a colorful collection of large plates, jars or artwork. You don't want to clutter it, but a few carefully chosen items will add color to the room and be a great conversation starter.
-
Step 3
Add seasonal flowers or greenery to the mantle. In the spring a vase filled with lilacs or daffodils will draw attention to the fireplace, while holly or pine cones would be more suitable in winter.
-
Step 4
Place a large mirror over the fireplace to help accentuate the focus. Mirrors also help make rooms appear larger than they really are.
-
Step 5
Display a set of fireplace accessories on the hearth. A set of polished brass tools look attractive if the decor in your house is modern, but a vintage set may be more suitable if you decorate in a country style.
-
Step 6
Keep a pile of logs in the fireplace when it's not in use. A few logs will look much more attractive then an empty fireplace full of ashes.
