The basic forward and back dance pattern is just the starting point of dancing the cha-cha (or cha-cha-cha). While there are many variations to the cha-cha, one of the easiest is the cross-step pattern. It's best to practice alone so you won't trip over your own feet or that of your partner.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with the basic cha-cha pattern by stepping back on the right foot and continuing through the cha-cha-cha.

  2. Step 2

Step forward with the left foot, but cross it over the right foot so you turn a little to the right.

  3. Step 3

Step forward again with the right foot, crossing it over the left foot.

  4. Step 4

Begin the cha-cha-cha by stepping forward on the left foot, then taking the next two steps in place as in the basic pattern.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4, this time starting with your right foot.

  6. Step 6

Finish by dancing the basic pattern as in Step 1.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can do the cross-step pattern as many times as you wish, but always end with the basic pattern so you can return to a centered position.
  • Remember to step onto the ball of your foot first, bend your knees and shift your weight with each step so your hips will have what's called the Cuban motion. Don't shuffle or bounce.
  • The cha-cha is traditionally danced to Latin music, but it can also be danced to Latin Pop or Latin Rock. You can also dance the cha-cha to any country music played in 4/4 time.
