Using spiral rods in curly hair is a bit challenging and requires time and practice to do well, but the reward is a head of shimmering spiral curls. Spiral curls will work on hair that is straight as well, but they work best with curly hair that is at least shoulder length.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comb
  • Hair gel
  • Hair clips
  • Spiral rods and end papers
  • Hair clips
  • Hairspray
  1. Step 1

Comb through the hair to tame curls and remove tangles.

  2. Step 2

Divide the hair into 1 to 2 inch triangular-shaped sections, keeping in mind that smaller sections will mean tighter curls. Secure each section with a clip.

  3. Step 3

Beginning at the nape of the neck, control curls by smoothing a bit of gel on a section of hair.

  4. Step 4

Put an end paper on the end of the hair, and wrap the hair around the rod enough to secure the hair on the rod. Wind the hair in a spiral motion around the rod, and fasten the ends of the rod.

  5. Step 5

Continue rolling the hair on spiral rods until all of the hair is wrapped.

  6. Step 6

Leave the hair on the spiral rods for at least an hour, then remove the rods and carefully arrange the curls with your fingers.

  7. Step 7

Give the spiral curls a light spritz of hairspray to prolong the curls.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spiral curls will hold best on naturally curly hair that hasn't been washed for at least a day because the natural oil in the hair will prolong the life of the curls.
  • If your hair is very thick or long, you may want to curl only the bottom part of the hair, instead of the entire head.
  • Feel free to experiment with different sizes of spiral rods, even mixing them to create both large and small curls.
