How to Curl Hair With a Marcel Flat Iron

Marcel irons are different from regular curling irons, which are spring-loaded, in that you have to move the iron handles yourself. Marcel irons offer a lot of benefits when curling hair, however. They heat up quickly, maintain their heat steadily from curl to curl, and can be easier to control when curling if you are used to using them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair clips
  • Marcel flat iron
  1. Step 1

Dry hair completely before curling. Either use a hair dryer and your fingers (not a brush) to dry hair in a loose, natural style or allow hair to air dry for the best response to curling.

  2. Step 2

Heat the Marcel iron. Most Marcel irons heat quickly, usually in about a minute.

  3. Step 3

Pull out a small section of hair. Spray the hair lightly with hairspray to help it hold the curl.

  4. Step 4

Open the Marcel iron and clip it on the hair near the head. Slide the iron down a few inches so that it is almost halfway down the section of hair. Take the hair ends in your other hand and wrap the hair around the Marcel iron, while at the same time rolling the Marcel iron up toward the roots of the hair.

  5. Step 5

Use your fingers to open and close the Marcel iron as you roll, allowing the hair to move and adjust.

  6. Step 6

Repeat with other sections. If curling multiple layers of hair, clip the top layers up and curl the bottom layers first, pulling each section out of the clipped portion so as not to crush the existing curls with the rest of the hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid touching the iron to the ears or scalp as you may burn the skin.
