One of the most important steps in salsa is the cross body lead. This move must be smooth and seamless so that you and your partner stay within the time of the music while switching your places. It does take some practice, but it is a fun step to do.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin the cross body lead during the salsa by standing in the ballroom position. Put your left hand on the man's shoulder if you are the woman. The man puts his right hand jut below the woman's shoulder blade, and holds the woman's left hand in his. Make sure that both elbows are bent as you hold your hands together.

  2. Step 2

Step forward with your left leg if you are the man. The woman steps back with her right leg.

  3. Step 3

Move forward again by stepping with your right leg, if you are the man. The woman steps back with her left leg.

  4. Step 4

Go backward by stepping back with your left leg when you are the man. The woman steps forward with her right leg.

  5. Step 5

Put your right leg back if you are the man. Your foot will end up behind your left foot, about a shoulder's width apart. The woman steps forward with her left leg.

  6. Step 6

    Repeat Step 2 and 3.

  7. Step 7

Turn toward the left so your torso is facing the middle of the floor if you are the man. You will gently pull on the woman's hand, and gently push her shoulder so she moves forward.

  8. Step 8

Continue to turn, still facing the woman, until you have switched positions. Your right side will now be turned toward the center of the floor if you are the man, and the woman's left side will now face toward the center.

  9. Step 9

Remember to telegraph plainly what you want the woman to do while you are doing cross body lead during the salsa. The man must clearly indicate where you wish the woman to move by gently pulling on the hands and pushing on her back.

  10. Step 10

Practice the cross body lead during the salsa repeatedly until you and your partner are able to do them smoothly, and in time with the music.
