How to Finish a Crochet Stitch When Crocheting Beanies

Once you've crocheted a beanie to the right size and length, it's time to make finishing stitches through the top of each of the triple crochets. These final stitches look like a row of chain stitches wrapping around the hat. This gives it a firm edging, and keeps the stitches neat.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the beanie with right side facing out.

    • 2

Insert your hook under the top two "v" stitches of the first triple crochet.

    • 3

Wrap yarn over the throat of the hook from back to front.

    • 4

Pull the yarn through the "v" stitch. You now have two loops on your hook.

    • 5

Draw a left loop through the right one so one loop remains on the hook.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until you come back around to the first triple crochet.

    • 7

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail that's a few inches long. Pull the tail through the loop on the hook. Tighten the knot and cut off the excess yarn as close to the knot as possible. Pull the areas to the left and right of knot so that it tightens further.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you pull the yarn through the top of the "v" stitch in step four, keep your hook moving in a fluid motion as you draw the yarn through the right loop.

  • The finished knot should blend in with the hat's fabric. If it doesn't, undo the knot and start over before making the final cut. You may also leave the tail long and weave it into the surrounding stitches.
