Crochet, like many fiber arts, is enjoying a new level of interest among people of all ages. New books and classes are appearing all the time with innovative patterns and wonderful new yarns. A beanie is a good project for beginners, especially with so many novelty yarns available.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a regular acrylic yarn for beginners. Select from an array of brilliant colors and pastels. Work this affordable yarn up quickly with a larger hook and bigger stitches.

  2. Step 2

Pick an acrylic blend for a softer, finished beanie. Work with a smaller hook, which means more stitches per inch. This creates a finer texture and a thinner beanie.

  3. Step 3

Purchase 100 percent cotton yarn for a flat finish. Choose a smaller hook for a smaller gauge and a finer finish.

  4. Step 4

Visit a yarn shop and check out the array of specialty yarns. Choose eyelash yarn for a fuzzy, fun look or a yarn with a metallic thread woven in for a more festive look. Look at the line of "fake fur" yarns, confetti yarns and "bubble" yarns.

  5. Step 5

Use wool and wool blends for the warmest beanie. Pick 100 percent wool and work with a larger hook for a beanie that works up quickly. Choose mohair and angora for a more delicate finished beanie that is warm, soft and fuzzy.

  6. Step 6

Crochet with baby yarn or sport weight when making the beanie for infants or small children. Choose pastel, blends or bright solids. Work with a G or H hook and finish the project quickly.
