How to Distinguish Characteristics of Corn Snakes

Corn snakes are native to the tropics and subtropics of America, Europe and Asia, but are also a very popular choice as a pet snake. Corn snakes are from the rat snake group and have very distinct features.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the top of the head of the snake. A corn snake will have an arrowhead shape on the top of its head.

    • 2

Observe the color and patterns on the back of the snake. A corn snake will be orange or brownish in color and have a pattern that represents diamond or spot shapes. Their color is their camouflage and makes the snake hard to see in the wild.

    • 3

Turn the snake over to see its belly. A corn snake will have a black and white checkerboard pattern over its entire belly region.

    • 4

Watch the snake's behavior. Although corn snakes can climb, they generally stay on the ground.

    • 5

Check the shape of the snake's body and eyes. A corn snake will have a very slender body and head. Most will grow to be about three to four feet long. The eyes will have round pupils instead of slender pupils. This helps them to see much better than other snakes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never assume that you know the breed of a snake. If you are unsure, always ask your local pet store representative or other animal/zoo expert.
