Buying a pet corn snake is a long-term commitment. Corn snakes can live up to 20 years, and their average length is 4 to 6 feet. Corn snakes need a secure habitat with things to climb on. You have to change their water daily and clean their tank at least once per week to ensure that your corn snake stays healthy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the total price of your purchase. This must include the corn snake, the habitat and all necessary accessories.

  2. Step 2

Think about the long-term commitment. Corn snakes require daily care, regular feedings and frequent habitat cleaning.

  3. Step 3

Look at the habitat for the corn snake to see if it is clean. Check the water to be sure it is fresh.

  4. Step 4

Pick the color of corn snake you want. Because of captive breeding, there are many different color phases of corn snakes available.

  5. Step 5

Find out if the corn snake is healthy. A healthy corn snake should have clear eyes, a round body, healthy skin and should be active and alert.

  6. Step 6

Ask when the corn snake last ate. If it has been more than a week, ask the associate to feed the snake while you are there. This will let you know if the snake has a healthy appetite.

  7. Step 7

Bring the corn snake straight home after you buy it. Corn snakes are cold blooded so they must be kept at a constant temperature to prevent respiratory problems.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never buy a corn snake that is not completely healthy. Some of the diseases that corn snakes carry can cause illness in humans.
  • Always wash your hands after handling your pet corn snake to prevent salmonella.
