Step 1
Make sure both you and your subject are comfortable. It can take a very long time to remove cornrows.
-
Step 2
Consider using a product to soften and moisturize the hair before you begin. Basic detangling spray is an affordable option; there are also specialized removal creams and sprays available at department stores and hair salons. Apply the product liberally to the cornrows so it penetrates the hair. This will not only make the cornrows easier to remove, but will also protect the hair and prevent breakage as you work.
-
Step 3
Remove any rubber bands or accessories in the hair.
-
Step 4
Begin at the bottom of a cornrow and start unraveling it. You can use your fingers or the pointed end of a comb or pick. A comb is especially useful if the cornrows are small or very tight.
-
Step 5
Comb out each cornrow after you've finished unraveling it. Be sure to comb the hair out thoroughly before moving on to the next cornrow. If you don't, you may end up with a mess of matted, tangled hair that will be impossible to comb out.
-
Step 6
Continue on to the next cornrow, repeating the process until you've taken them all down.
-
Step 7
Avoid pulling or tugging excessively on hair, as you may cause breakage. Remain patient and take your time throughout the entire process.
