Windows Explorer is file tracking service offered in all of the newer generations of the Windows operating systems. Windows Explorer allows you to search through your computer system and look at the various folders and files. While this gives experienced users a great deal of access, it also enables novice users to accidentally change or remove something important so you need to use it with caution.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Right-click on any folder on your system, including the ones on your desktop, such as "My Computer" or "My Documents" and choose "Explore" from the context menu.

  2. Step 2

Look over the Windows Explorer interface. At the top you have your toolbars and menubars; you can easily customize Explorer interface with the options in these areas. On the left you have a cascading folder menu and on the right is the view pane.

  3. Step 3

Press the "+" sign next to any folder to expand its listing, showing all the folders within it. Some of those folders may also have plus signs and can also be expanded. Press the "-" sign to collapse a folder so you can no longer see its contents.

  4. Step 4

Select a folder on the left to have its contents displayed on the right. The view pane shows all of the folders and files within your selection. You can also navigate through folders here by clicking on the one you want to expand.

  5. Step 5

Change how the Windows Explorer displays information by selecting "Tools" then "Folder Options" at the top of the window. The first two tabs, "General" and "View," contain several things that you can do to customize the program to your liking. The last tab, named "File Types," is an advanced system so novice users should avoid it.
