Cats aren't dogs and they are very hard to train because they have a mind of their own. However, if you constantly do the same thing with your cat you may get some results from obedience training. Each cat is different, but if you start with a young cat and remain consistent and persistent, chances are good he will obey you.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Name your cat and use her name often. If you constantly repeat the same name, you have a good chance of your cat responding to the name. You need to stress the importance of calling the cat by her name to anyone else in your household and be consistent in using it.

  2. Step 2

Offer your cat treats when she responds to her name. Rewards work well for cats and if you consistently offer the cat a treat when she responds to her name, this is an incentive she can relate to.

  3. Step 3

Praise your cat when she responds to her name. This is reinforcing good behavior--just as you did with the treat. Now you are giving her attention and she likes that too.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the other members of your household are in agreement with the way you treat and train your cat. Only by your consistent and persistent behavior can you get your cat to obey your commands.

  5. Step 5

Use Steps 1 through 4 to teach your cat other things besides responding to her name.

Tips & Warnings
  • Not all cats respond the same way. You can try different things with your cat and see what works. When you find a good method be consistent and persistent in its use.
  • Begin training your cat from the start--the younger you begin her training the better chances you have of success.
