Carnivorous plants are plants that actively trap prey, such as insects, frogs and some small mammals, and ultimately digest them. The many varieties of carnivorous plants accomplish this in different ways. Follow these steps to help you identify some of the major types of carnivorous plants.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Observe the Sundew's appearance. The Sundew has leaves with tentacles, and the tip of the tentacles has a covering of a sticky or dew-like substance used to trap prey. In the sun, the Sundew can even appear as if it is glowing or glistening because of this sticky substance. Sundews come in many varieties, from rosette shaped to tall and thin shaped.

  2. Step 2

Look at the appearance of the Butterwort. This type of carnivorous plant comes in many colors and varieties. They typically have a rosette shape and broad, flat leaves. The leaves also may have curled edges, and they have a greasy appearance that helps trap prey. The Butterwort flowers easily.

  3. Step 3

Learn about the four varieties of Pitcher Plants. The North American Pitcher Plant contains long stalks with large trumpet shaped pitchers and beautiful flowers. The Australian Pitcher Plant has a smaller size with smaller pitchers. It has a rosette shape and lies close to the ground. The South American Pitcher Plant has large pitchers that have a small spoon shaped structure near the opening of the pitcher. The Tropical Pitcher Plant contains pitchers that hang down off the stalks of the plant's leaves. The pitchers in all of these Pitcher Plants aid in trapping prey.

  4. Step 4

Take note of the Bladderwort's appearance. The Bladderwort has small leaves, flowers and small bladders. The bladders have hairs near their openings that trigger the bladder to close and inflate trapping prey. Bladderworts live in open water.

  5. Step 5

Get to know the Corkscrew Plant. This type of carnivorous plant contains a yellow or purple flower and leaves in a rosette shape. The plant's trap consists of spiral-grooved tubes that come together in a V-shape underground.

  6. Step 6

Study the appearance of the Venus Flytrap. This plant is probably the most recognizable of all of the carnivorous plants. The traps of this plant consist of two lobed leaves that come together to trap prey. The leaves also contain hairs and interlocking teeth.
