- Mitts
- Sponges
- Water
- Car shampoo
- Rags

Step 1
Start with new or clean supplies, especially if you washed the bottom of the car before the top. Test new supplies in a small area to make sure they won't scratch the surface as you clean. Make sure your mitt and sponges are free of stones, gravel and grime.

Wet down the area where you work. As you spray water, look for foreign material that could scratch the car's paint and remove it. Spraying the entire car may cause spotting.

Use a mild car shampoo that lubricates to help protect the car's surface. Dish detergent may strip the car's wax or dull the finish.

Dip your mitts, sponges or rags in a different bucket than your soap bucket to reduce the amount of grit moving across the car's surface. You may want to use a professional bucket designed to separate the grit from the clean water.

Check cleaning supplies as you work to ensure they are free from debris.

Rinse the area to remove excess dirt and residue. If dirt remains on the car, rewash the area.

Wipe off excess water with a chamois, a paint-safe squeegee or a soft terry cloth towel. Work quickly to prevent spotting or streaks.
