If you enjoy burning candles or are seeking an interesting hobby, you can make your own soy candle. A soy candle is made with soy wax, which is an all-natural alternative to paraffin that is easier to work with. This recipe will give you all the steps necessary to make your own soy candle to enjoy or give as a special handmade gift.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 lb. soy wax
  • Saucepan for melting
  • Wooden spoon
  • 1 mason jar
  • Ruler
  • Wick
  • Scissors
  • Wick tab
  • Pliers
  • Glue dot or super glue
  • 1 oz. fragrance oil
  • Liquid wax dye
  • Wick pin or pencil
  1. Step 1

Put the soy wax in the saucepan. Place the pan on the stove over low-medium heat. Occasionally stir wax with the spoon while performing other steps.

  2. Step 2

Use the ruler to measure the depth of the jar. Add 1/2-inch onto that length and cut the wick to the new measurement.

  3. Step 3

Thread the wick through the wick tab and secure the tab to the end of the wick. Depending on the type of wick tab you have, you may need to use pliers to lock it. Place a glue dot or super glue on the bottom of the tab.

  4. Step 4

Place the wick in the middle of the mason jar and push it down so it sticks.

  5. Step 5

Stir the wax and remove it from the heat, if melted through. Then add the fragrance oil and one drop of the wax dye into the melted wax. Mix well.

  6. Step 6

Pour the melted wax into the mason jar. Place the wick pin or pencil across the opening of the jar to hold the wick center.

  7. Step 7

Let the wax cool for about 2 hours; then enjoy your new scented soy candle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the mason jar is clean and dry before using it.
  • You can add more of the wax dye to the melted wax to get the desired color. When the wax hardens, the color will be lighter than it appears when it is in liquid form.
  • Candlemaking supplies can usually be found at your local craft store.
