How to Install a Floppy Drive Ribbon

Installing a floppy drive is based on individual needs while building a personal computer (PC). This decision affects your choice of motherboard and PC case. The motherboard you select needs to have a floppy drive connector for the ribbon to be inserted into and the case needs to have a 3.5-inch drive bay. After the floppy drive is mounted and secured in the drive bay, install the floppy drive ribbon.

Instructions

1. Locate the floppy drive ribbon. The ribbon has a twist in the inner cables at one end. A new floppy drive comes with its own ribbon. Or, use the existing ribbon if you are replacing an existing drive.

2. Insert the flat, non-twist end of the ribbon into the motherboard connector. Ensure that pin 1 is lined up with the "PIN 1" label on the motherboard. Press firmly to make the connection.

3. Line up the notch in the floppy drive connector with the raised bump on the twist end of the ribbon and press firmly to lock it in place.

Tips & Warnings

• Connect the ribbon to the floppy drive connector before mounting the drive if the PC case is too small to work inside.
• Use a 5.25- to 3.5-inch bay adapter to mount a floppy drive in a PC case that only has 5.25-inch drive bays.
• The pins on the floppy drive and motherboard connectors are easily bent if the ribbon is installed poorly. Make sure to line up the ribbon and pins exactly before applying too much pressure.
