Step 1
Measure the width of the bonsai's branches at their widest point. The width of the pot should match the width of the branches.
-
Step 2
Determine the width of the bonsai's trunk slightly above its base. The pot's depth must be equal to the width of the trunk.
-
Step 3
Choose unique pots for cascading trees. Ideally, the width of the pot is half the span of the tree. The depth of the pot is limited to no more than half the height of the tree.
-
Step 4
Select a pot that reflects the message of the tree. For example, place formal trees in straight-lined pots. Asymmetrical trees look nice in pots with curves or scalloping.
-
Step 5
Match the color of the pot to the bonsai. Conifers do well in neutral-colored pots with earth tones. Place flowering bonsais in a pot with colors that compliment the bonsai's flower
-
Step 6
Examine the selected pot for drainage holes. Drainage holes allow excess water to filter through the pot and are necessary for the bonsai plant's health.
-
Step 7
Look for tie-down holes in the pot. Tie-down holes are used with wire to help stabilize your bonsai plant.
