How to Pick a BMX Bicycle Size

No matter what size BMX bike you ride, at some point you'll hear comments about how small it looks. BMX bikes appear small when compared to traditional touring bikes, but they have to be to maintain maneuverability. There are basically eight different frame sizes and several wheel sizes to consider when choosing a BMX bike. Figuring out which is the best fit for you takes lots of testing and an open mind.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Consider the top tube length, which is the most common measurement. The top tube is the bar that runs from the handlebars to the seat. It typically ranges from 15 to 21 inches, and a longer tube means a longer wheel base. A longer wheel base provides more stability at high speeds but also makes spinning tricks a bit harder.
Step2
Choose a wheel size based on what type of riding you're going to do. The 20-inch size is most common for street riding and some types of racing. However a 24- to 26-inch wheel is required for cruiser class racing.
Step3
Try different seat heights to determine the best fit for you. It's very common in street riding to ride with the seat in the lowest position to give you more room when you do tricks. Raising the seat up high helps you pinch the seat with your knees when you do more difficult tricks, and it's more comfortable when you are riding around.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember it's the length of the bike and seat height that most affect the feel of a bike. Some very tall riders prefer the fit of a short bike so make comfort rather than your height the priority when you decide on a frame size.
  • Most reputable bike shops allow you to try a bike out before you buy it to ensure a proper fit. Once you find one you like, make sure you ride it first to test the comfort and fit.
