The mandolin can be plucked, strummed or picked and is a standard instrument of folk, country and bluegrass bands alike. Basic picking techniques must be mastered before players can move into the more complicated playing styles that grab the attention of beginning players. Use a steady foot tapping to keep the beat.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with single note picking using just the right hand. This is the most basic mandolin picking technique employing just the open strings using the left hand to steady the instrument.

  2. Step 2

Play the G string 4 times. Use the down stroke picking for each note.

  3. Step 3

Hit the D string 4 times. Pick the note on the proper beat in a simple 4-4 beat.

  4. Step 4

Pick the A string 4 times. Remember to keep in time with the tapping foot.

  5. Step 5

Play the E string 4 times. The higher E string should be the easiest note to pick; since it's the thinnest string, it gives the least resistance.

  6. Step 6

Move back down the strings playing each string 4 times. This gives the beginning mandolin player a feel for the placement of the strings, as well as a sense of rhythm.
