One of the more popular styles of bass playing first made popular in the 1970s is the thumb-slap. This groove style of bass playing is reminiscent of such bands as Sly and Family Stone. Slapping the bass to get the groove is a retro approach which adds depth to a bass player's repertoire.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a pentatonic scale, such as E, to hammer on and slap the bass simultaneously. This produces a groove bass technique.

  2. Step 2

Play the notes in a funky mood. Grooving is an attitude. Many famous bass players move in dancelike movements when grooving as if the instrument was their dance partner. The bass is a rhythm instrument and the groove style sets the tone for everyone to follow.

  3. Step 3

Practice the groove style of playing before trying to increase the speed. Some experts say the method of slapping on the bass in this manner comes directly from the tambourine playing in gospel choirs.

  4. Step 4

Groove on the bass relentlessly. Managers and bands auditioning for bass players often choose a bass player based on his ability to slap for the groove. The grooving style is the winning style of bass playing when looking for gigs.
