A highlighter can be used to add a dramatic or subtle look to your usual makeup routine. You can apply a highlighter under the eye, much like you would eyeliner, to create the illusion of wider eyes. The look can then be smudged for a more subtle look. The steps below will tell you how you can use a highlighter when applying your makeup.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Highlighter pencil or brush
  • Sponge
  1. Step 1

Choose a light white colored powder highlighter with a brush or a highlighter pencil in a white shade. If you are using a highlighter pencil, sharpen the pencil before using it.

  2. Step 2

Pick a texture of highlighter to apply based on the occasion for which you will be wearing it. A highlighter with glitter or shimmer would look great if you are going to a party, while a highlighter that is more subtle with a sheen or even a matte finish is great for an everyday daytime look.

  3. Step 3

Begin applying your highlighter at the inner corner of the eye working outward toward the outer edge of the lower lash line. If you have wide set eyes, begin in the center and work out to the outer corner.

  4. Step 4

Apply the highlighter on top of the lower lash line, just as if you were applying eyeliner to it. Use soft and feathery strokes for a more subtle look or a heavy line for a more dramatic look.

  5. Step 5

Blend the eyeliner with a sponge or your finger to soften the look if you would like to play up the more subtle look.

  6. Step 6

Finish applying the rest of your eye makeup including your eyeliner, eye shadow and mascara.
