Going from standing up on 2 water skis to standing up on 1 ski might seem scary at first. The new maneuvers you learn on 1 ski, cutting in the water and turning with ease, makes confronting the scary process worth it, though.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Dive into the water, grab your slalom ski and set yourself up for a 1-foot start in water skiing. Make sure you wear a life jacket and follow all the rules and regulations for water skiing.

  2. Step 2

Place the left leg in the top binding of the slalom ski with the other leg trailing behind you in the water to help balance the take off.

  3. Step 3

Bring your knee of the left leg up to your life jacket, placing your body in a crouch position, which reflects the 2-footed position when water skiing on 2 skis.

  4. Step 4

Give thumbs up to start the boat forward to tighten the ropes up the whole line. If you feel a too-strong pull that makes you lose your balance, signal the boat to ease up.

  5. Step 5

Give the signal to pull you out of the water, full speed ahead. Allow the ski boat to speed up while you straighten your arms, keeping your head up at all times.

  6. Step 6

Rise slowly out of the water as you come to a position where you stand on the ski. Take the back foot and position it in the rear binding.

  7. Step 7

Keep at it if you experience a difficult time getting up at first. Once you've mastered getting up on a slalom ski, water skiing becomes more about cutting the water and turning, compared to 2-footed water skiing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Water skiers believe that the type of slalom ski you use tends to influence how well you get up on 1 water ski.
