Step 1
Purchase a sturdy 6-foot leash and collar. These items help you maintain control of the walk, yet allow your dog enough freedom to visit the world a bit.
-
Step 2
Speak a 1- or 2-word phrase, such as "Let's walk," and start walking at a normal pace. If your dog starts pulling on the leash, stop walking and wait for her to look back at you.
-
Step 3
Start walking forward again once you have the dog's attention. Stop again any time he starts pulling and causes the leash to tighten. Praise him when he stops and gives you attention with a 1- or 2-word phrase, such as "Good dog."
-
Step 4
Continue to walk and stop, walk and stop, going a little further each time. Praise your dog each time she gives a correct response.
