Tension in the knees and thighs leads to stiff walking, hip pain and a weak lower back. Use massage techniques to work this tension out. Knee and thigh massage is also great preparation for further stretching and exercise.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have the person receiving the massage lie down on his back. Loosen the muscles for massage by gently kneading the thigh from the top of the muscle down to the knee. Continue on to the calf and tibia muscles just below the knee. Turn the person onto his stomach and do the same to the back of the thigh and knee.

  2. Step 2

Place the person on the ground lying on her back. Bend her foot to her knee. Place your hands with thumbs together in a butterfly position. Place your hands on the thigh just above the knee and apply a moderate pressure. Hold the position for 5 seconds and then move up a section towards the hip. Continue this progression until you get to the hip and then perform the massage on the other leg.

  3. Step 3

Make a fist and use the flat of your knuckles to massage the quadriceps and hamstrings in circles. Go back over each muscle group with thumb rotations to identify and release knots. Move down to the back of the knee and pay attention to the tendons on either side of the knee.

  4. Step 4

Ask the person to return to lying on his back. Very gently, move the patella of his knee from side to side. Perform a few rotations. Then move the patella in an up and down motion. After this, massage the tendons below and to the side of the knee and then do the tendons that sit just above the knee. Repeat the same process with the second knee.
