Beginner climbers can learn the sport by practicing on a rock wall. Rock walls are found at many indoor climbing facilities and gyms. You'll not only have fun climbing a rock wall, but also learn the fundamentals that prepare you to handle actual mountainous terrain.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear comfortable clothing and climbing boots. You also need to get into the correct position by securing yourself into a harness and getting comfortable with the ropes.

  2. Step 2

Put your left foot in the lowest hold on the wall. Move your body up by grabbing the holds above your head with your arms.

  3. Step 3

Cross your right leg over to the hold above your left foot. By doing this, you stay centered and keep your balance easily. It's a more controlled movement than simply reaching your foot up to any available foothold.

  4. Step 4

Keep climbing up the rock wall using a left/right/left sequence with your legs. Use your legs to climb instead of your arms.

  5. Step 5

Maintain extra support with your hands. Keep your hands on the holds above your head in case you lose balance while making your way up the rock wall.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to use hand holds that are easily accessible. You don't want to overextend your arms and lose your footing below.
  • You can descend basically the same way that you ascended. Make your way down the wall using the footings or simply slide down with your harness.
