Hot stone massage involves the application of heated stones to the body as an addition to deep tissue massage. The stones warm and relax the muscles, and their gentle weight promotes a sense of peace and well-being. Stones are applied to different parts of the body as the massage session progresses.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Set of stones
  • Stone warmer or crock pot containing water set on low
  • Cleaner and disinfectant marketed for massage stones
  1. Step 1

Remove the stones in the same order you applied them. This technique works well for a series of small stones applied to the face or between the toes. Removing them in the application order brings the phase full circle and gives a sense of closure to this phase of the massage treatment.

  2. Step 2

Lift off stones starting with the heaviest and working your way down in size and weight. If the stones are sized in pairs, remove two at a time from parallel areas of the body. This works well for the application of stones of various sizes to a large area such as the recipient's back. Removing the heaviest first makes the overall removal feel more gradual, and the removal of the final stone more subtle.

  3. Step 3

Move stones from the arms or legs two at a time, one from each limb. Use this approach when the stones are applied to both thighs at once, or between the toes of both feet, for example. This technique makes the removal of the stones feel balanced to the recipient.

  4. Step 4

Place the removed stones back in the warmer so that you can reapply them to the recipient's body later in the therapeutic session.

  5. Step 5

Clean and disinfect the stones after the session so that they will be ready to use with the next person.
